TV Series: Better Call Saul

To this day, Breaking Bad still is one of my favourite TV Shows. The story, the photography, the characters, the soundtrack, … That show brought TV Shows to a new level. I was thrilled when I learned that one of the characters, Saul Goodman, would get his own show, created by Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould, who also worked on Breaking Bad.

Saul Goodman was a fun character, acting as comic relief in Breaking Bad, so I wasn’t sure what to expect from the spin off. Season 1 answered most of my questions: Better Call Saul wasn’t going to be a comedy, but Saul, aka Jimmy, still had his knack for delivering the best one-liners, something that was definitely needed in a vey dark show.

Better Call Saul takes its time. It can feel slow at times, but the camera work makes it worth it. Beautiful perspectives, long takes, a lot of work on colours, tons of hidden references, and great soundtracks make this show another U.F.O., much like Breaking Bad was.

Here is one of those “Blink and you’ll miss it” scenes, an obvious wink to The Beatles’ Abbey Road:

And here is a crazy long take I loved. The soundtrack puts it together very nicely, I think:

I hope I’ve convinced you to give Better Call Saul a try! 🙂

I loved watching Better Call Saul on Netflix – I binged watched it. I also love these small winks and hat tips to pop culture from the past. For a person who is not from the West, I end up often researching them on Wikipedia – and learn more about intricacies of culture. I think we are truly living in a great age of Television story telling.

We’re watching Breaking Bad atm and we’re up to season 3. I love it and hate it at the same time. None of the characters are at all likeable and I always feel miserable after watching it but it’s so gripping I can’t stop watching it. Sometimes I think I should just read what happens on Wikipedia and avoid having to watch the rest 🙂

Saul is a great character and a good addition to the show. I heard about the new series based on his character and it sounds promising although I haven’t seen any of it. Not yet anyway.
