November 2022: as soon as ChatGPT came out, the number of questions asked declined rapidly. ChatGPT is faster and it’s trained on StackOverflow data, so the quality of answers is similar. Plus, ChatGPT is polite and answers all questions, in contrast to StackOverflow moderators.
May 2025: the number of monthly questions is as low as when Stack Overflow launched in 2009.
Stack overflow is almost dead
I can’t help but wonder:
- How long until the site owners give up on it or switch strategies? Stack Overflow communities are one of the backbones of the web. Not just development topics, too ; Stack Overflow is so much more. Will that content disappear forever or become pay gated?
- What will this mean for the overall quality of LLMs in the future? Stack Overflow’s discussions and weighted questions / answers must be an important high quality base material. Will LLMs be impacted when they no longer have access to discussions about recent events and evolutions?
