WordPress, TV Series, music, kids, and board games. I think that’s probably the best way to define me in a few words. ๐Ÿ™‚

I work at Automattic where I lead a team building tools for bloggers and creators. I talk a lot about WordPress things, but also about all things open source in general.

I post in English and in French.

TIL about CryptPad, a Google Docs alternative. Somehow this is the first time I hear about it! The project seems pretty cool. @Em0nM4stodon wrote an extensive guide about it:

If you have been looking for a privacy-respectful replacement to Google Docs, now is the time to move! ๐Ÿ“ฆ

@cryptpad offers a full office suite that is completely end-to-end encrypted and built from the ground up with data minimization in mind.

And it’s free! ๐ŸŽ‰

Why stay with Google when there is a much better option literally right there๐Ÿ‘‡

CryptPad Review: Replacing Google Docs

I’m thinking I may give it a try locally, although I will keep an eye on the GitHub repo before I set up an instance for my family. I’m not seeing a ton of activity in the past month, but it could just be temporary. I do see that they have secured some EU funding, they already make money through their hosted instance, they make supporting them easy via OpenCollective, and they’re open about their financial status, so that’s all promising signs in my book!

    @jeremy Unfortunately itโ€˜s pretty hard to self-host. Never got around running it correctly via Docker.

      Ich hatte frรผher oft den Eindruck, dass die irgendwie abgekapselt sind. Habe OSS Projekte gesehen, die nicht mal in Englisch gefรผhrt wurden etc. Oft haben wir "gefrotzelt".
      Aber aktuell machen sie echt einen guten VorstoรŸ finde ich ๐Ÿค—

    @jeremy note they have lots of activity in their other branches: https://github.com/cryptpad/cryptpad/branches

    I just set up @cryptpad self-hosted the other week and it was pretty easy, definitely recommend!

    @jeremy
    Hi, the main repository is calm in between releases because the activity is in branches. For example here, but there are many branches before we end up merging..

    There are also other repositories with plugins and other part of our work, such as our Office document integration based on OnlyOffice

      Thanks for the added context! I’ll definitely give Cryptpad a try in the next few days!
