WordPress, TV Series, music, kids, and board games. I think that’s probably the best way to define me in a few words. πŸ™‚

I work at Automattic where I lead a team building tools for bloggers and creators. I talk a lot about WordPress things, but also about all things open source in general.

I post in English and in French.

I live in Brittany, France, so you’ll also find me sharing pictures from our beautiful region from time to time.

About a year ago, Adri and I bought a new apartment. Over the months that followed, we planned, scheduled, and worked with contractors to make this place our home. After 10 months of work, we’re quite happy with the result!

For posterity’s sake, here are a few pictures of the process.

The apartment wasn’t in a great condition when we bought it:

The first thing to do was to get rid of all these walls. We needed 2 rooms: a main room that we would use as kitchen, office, and bedroom, and a separate room for Lili.

Once we had some room to breathe, we built the wall separating the main room from what would become Lili’s room:

Things are starting to look a lot better. Notice the ytong wall on the left.

We then added dry walls in multiple places and blocked one of the bathroom’s doors. Once the dry walls were in place, the electrician could come and install the wiring. We opted to add a false ceiling above the kitchen area. That made it a lot easier to place as many lights as we wanted.

Once wiring was done, we got a small visit from the plumber, got AC installed, and then the painters were able to come, brighten things up a bit.

The bathroom also got a nice refresh:

Time to deal with the floors. As much as we loved the hardwood flooring in our previous apartment, we needed something different: we needed the same floors everywhere in the apartment, so we went with vinyl flooring; it’s waterproof, warm, easy to clean, easy to maintain, and not too expensive:

Quite nice after 4 months of work, wouldn’t you say? ? Once this was done, we only had 3 things left to do: install furnitures, lights (LEDs everywhere!), and move in!

Almost done! You’ve probably noticed the black wall in Lili’s room. Under the black layer of paint, we added magnetic paint. Lili can draw on that wall and can stick magnets to it as well!

How do you like the end result?

Looks good to me. The only thing I don’t really get is that black wall.

You have to picture it full of chalk drawings and magnets, because it’s not black anymore πŸ™‚

It’s more of a playing wall for our daughter.

This is amazing! I can’t believe you lived with all of that rubble! Was it like that for 4 months? Looks great.

We actually didn’t live there yet, so that made things easy. We couldn’t have lived there, there was no electricity or water for most of the 4 months πŸ™‚
